Nestled in the heart of Sail Boat bend in Fort Lauderdale, Barry Gross Gallery is a sacred space for true mastery of artistic expression. Meeting with Barry Gross was such a enriching, beautiful human experience. If you want to meet someone real, who is genuine and helps you really appreciate life, you've got to meet Barry. His thought provoking presence helps one to feel at peace and at the same time realize that there is more to life than just always striving to reach a goal.
More about Barry Gross
Barry Gross hasn't always had the means of being able to focus solely on his art. He started drawing and painting at a very early age in childhood. Then as a preteen, as most teenagers would, he got distracted away from it and forgot about his passion. In the late sixties while Barry was still a teenager, he went into the Navy and subsequently served in the Vietnam war. It was while he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, when he began painting again. He realized then that this was his passion.
After he got out of the Navy he went to Pratt Institute for Art in New York. He didn't like some of the subjects he was taking, so he went into illustration. He realized he really loved illustrating. However, he also became cognizant of the fact that most Artists run into challenging times trying to sell their art and make a living. So, he had to take up other jobs to support his passion. Jobs such as: teaching special education, bartending - basically jobs that offered certain hours so that he could still be able to paint everyday. He found that he was able to create the life he wanted for himself without society or civilization dictating how it should be.
Don't turn your back on faith
He worked for a while as an airbrush artist until around 1980 when he picked up oils. He wanted to focus on the style of painting that he loved - capturing human imagery and intimacy while experimenting and teaching himself to paint with oil.
He says it's an ongoing process of learning, "when you experiment, you experience." Life was not always easy for Barry; in fact he sometimes had a very difficult time as far as supporting his dream.
For a while he was even homeless, living in his truck and painting at a storage facility. Being an independent and private individual, he felt like he had go out on his own to create the life he wanted and sometimes it involved uncomfortable situations. Experiences like these taught him that in order to be happy in life, you don't really need much.
Florida is not really an easy place for the arts. Having moved from New York seventeen years ago to look after his family, Barry has seen fluctuating trends in the South Florida art industry. An art district will open up and operate for about three to five years and then all of a sudden it will falls through. Art is not supported as it should be. More people need to buy art because that is what keeps the gallery open and the artist painting. Take Wynwood in Miami for example, it has been around for about fifteen years but slowly the art galleries are being replaced by restaurants, cafés and boutiques because the rent is too high. Barry likens it to Soho, New York where the artists moved into warehouses and art was booming until the rents got too high and not enough art was being sold.
Barry's paintings are usually large scale paintings. His thought provoking art depicts real life, sometimes appearing dark but really just reflecting an air of Renaissance - where the light always comes through the dark. He choses darker colors because the dark colors are moody and dramatic but have a deep story to tell. His work gives a whole new meaning to life and really get you to think about day to day living and being in the now.
Most people like bright and colorful pieces for decoration, which is fine. For Barry however, he enjoys painting pieces that piques your imagination. Art that brings you out of that little space that everyone is almost afraid to go into. His paintings get you to think about your shadows, motives, intentions and distinguish ego from just being. One of his paintings is a man looking into the mirror and the message is: the less you judge yourself the more you release the facades and the less you judgmental you become with others. The paintings also demonstrate the various evolutionary stages of mankind and his survival. There is an certain sensuality to a lot of his paintings.
Barry's message is about making people aware. There is so much healing in art. Children use their imagination and come up with different stories. We as a society need to encourage them to follow their passions and dreams instead of deterring them and focusing on just making money. Humans should make time to actually live. Keep the faith. Spend true quality time with your loved ones. Barry hopes his art opens up some doors for people to get real about living life.

As a student at NYU, he found that students were never really taught to dig deeper beyond symptoms. He likened it to putting on band aids. He explained that on the other hand, functional medicine fixes the root of the problem. It’s like rocket science because with traditional medicine, you don’t have time to address all the underlying issues when you only have five minutes with your patient. With functional medicine, you take time with your patients and get to know them in depth.
"During his extensive blood work and history evaluation, Dr. Nerette prescribes a detailed treatment plan to prevent symptoms, making patients feel younger and rediscovering themselves.”
He and his team will study the patient’s sleep habits, their nutrition lifestyle, vitamins, activities, stress levels to figure out how to bring them back in balance and treat them naturally.
Some of the challenges that Dr. Nerette faces in this area of business, come from doctors who don’t understand the type of work he is doing. He says that only a few of his colleagues understand what functional medicine is and are aware of some of the treatments they use to treat chronic diseases. Traditional medicine doesn’t really acknowledge functional medicine. A chronic issue such as cholesterol which would normally take about six years to treat, can be treated in six months at Bellissimo spa by utilizing natural methods instead of taking medications that have so many side-effects. This upsets a lot of folk in the medical and pharmaceutical industry. Ironically, in the last twelve months, Dr. Nerette says that most of his patients have been doctors. Because functional medicine is growing and expanding, University of Miami is planning on having a functional medicine department in the next few years. He says this is the “way of the future”, despite the “traditionalists” feeling behind.
Dr. Nerette not only specializes in natural hormones called Bio Identical hormones but he is also among a handful of physicians that replace them using pellets for hormonal balance. His med spa provides procedures such as Botox and Dermal Fillers as well. They are treating patients with fibromyalgia within three months. Dr. Nerette is happy to report that his treatments even save marriages. A lot of times when there is a hormonal imbalance, this can affect estrogen, progesterone or testosterone, causing a lot of stress and other issues that lead to turmoil in the home. For example, a decrease in sexual appetite (libido) can greatly affect relationships. When the root of these symptoms is treated by fixing the body, the brain follows and this many times changes the scenario and harmony is once again restored.
Bellissimo spa also works very closely in conjunction with psychiatrists to help treat patients. They are also introducing medical cannabis, a natural healing plant. He is one of the only doctors in Weston, Florida who is licensed to prescribe medical marijuana to patients if necessary – to treat diseases such as cancer, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy (chronic seizures), glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s disease (disorder of the spinal cord) and post-traumatic stress disorder (for especially former military members and patients who are terminally ill).
