South Florida's Source For Local Happenings
Dr. Daniel Monsalve is one of those individuals who has a vision to help heal the world around him in a natural and holistic way. We recently had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Daniel Monsalve, owner of Monsalve Integrative Chiropractic in Coral Gables, Miami.
Dr. Monsalve is originally from New Jersey but his family moved down to Miami when he was about six years old. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Florida International University. Having grown up most of his life in Miami, he has soft spot in his heart for his Miami community. His wife has been a major inspiration for opening his practice. In addition, his mother, who is from South America has also been a huge influence on living a holistic life.
Dr. Monsalve shared about his mother, “she doesn’t like doctors; not for any scientific reason. She just doesn’t trust doctors. If you were sick, she would offer you a hot lemonade with honey. Only in rare cases would she give you an aspirin.” He added, “she would encourage just laying down and recuperating with home remedies known as “Casero”. ‘Casero’ is a Spanish word for home and in this case, it related to the mentioned ‘home remedies’.
Originally, he went to school for pre-med with the hopes of becoming a vet. He worked for vet as a veterinary technician for a year and a half. While working there, he didn’t like the overuse of antibiotics and steroids that the animals were being subjected to. He was bothered by the heavy allopathic method of treatments. Dr. Monsalve preferred a more holistic, natural and hands-on approach.
At the time, he had hurt himself and due to accumulated pain from previous injuries, he decided to seek chiropractic care.
Around the same period, after leaving school his dad begun having really bad sciatic pain. To top that off, his mother was suffering from arthritis and back pain. This got Dr. Monsalve thinking of how he can help his family and community.
Dr. Monsalve actually sent his mother to his chiropractor before he began his visits. Seeing that her health begun improving, Dr. Monsalve was encouraged to go the route of becoming a chiropractor.
Not only did his family chiropractor make an impact on his mother's life, but he found that the care that he was receiving from his chiropractor was different from other doctors. He liked the methods and the idea of treatment he was being provided. Not to mention, his overall improvement of health. He’s always liked the approach of encouraging and empowering people to take care of themselves rather than relying on treatments and medications.

By the time he had completed his undergrad studies, Dr. Monsalve was firm in his decision to switch to chiropractic instead of remaining in the medical field. He was happy with his decision to enroll in chiropractic school. After graduating in December 2013, he started his practice in May of 2014. One of the first goals was to accrue his license and then find the location.
The toughest challenges of starting and running a business successfully, are across the board very similar with most companies. As with any small company, it’s usually building the brand and establishing trust within the community. Luckily, Dr. Monsalve had already begun building his base by serving his friends, family and community. This made it easier to build his practice. “Another challenging thing,” Dr. Monsalve shared, “was finding the right space and my voice within the profession”. Basically, finding out what made him different from other health providers. What would drive him to stand on a pedestal and say “this is what sets me apart, this is why you want to come see me”? He adds, "in a very humble way."
Chiropractors are all so different in their techniques and styles, so Dr. Monsalve actually encourages people to try alternate chiropractors. Once he begun his practice he integrated functional medicine as one of his treatments. This focuses on optimal functioning of the body and its organs, usually incorporating systems of holistic or alternative medicine. He will always tell potential clients, “I’ll work with you for a little bit; if you don’t like the technique I use then I encourage you to go and find someone who uses a different technique”.
“I try to incorporate a lot of different techniques so that I can suit everybody, but I am not the type that’s ever going to tell somebody ‘no, don’t go see them – come see me instead’”.
His philosophy is very different. He doesn’t feel like he has the answer for everybody; he feels like he has great suggestions. Dr. Monsalve doesn't have a problem referring his potential clients to other professionals. They might have a better solution to whatever problem the person might be having. He wants everybody to feel comfortable and make their own decisions, by encouraging them and giving them the information that they need. For example, last week someone called with a shoulder issue to make an appointment. The person also stated they were interested in acupuncture. He asked them what made them more comfortable and they said “I think I want to try the acupuncture”. He responded with “Then go ahead, try the acupuncture first. If it works out, phenomenal! Great - I'm glad you’re feeling better! If not, and you still want to try me, give me a call back.” When it comes to chiropractic, what sets Dr. Monsalve apart is his willingness to let go of patients. His main concern is providing the information the patient needs to get better.
He will usually set a goal with time limits before treatment, whereby if they are not seeing the intended results within that time frame, they take a different approach. What makes him the proudest is that he is able to let his ego go and do what’s best for his patients. When his patients get good results, whether with him or anybody else, he feels wonderful and fills his heart.
Currently, Monsalve Integrative Chiropractic brings in new patients via word of mouth as opposed to internet marketing. There is more of a trust component when somebody is recommended versus seeing an online advertisement. Dr. Monsalve’s short term goals (six months to a year) involve increasing the office hours. Being that the clinic is still young, he wants to expand the volume of clients. Why? Because he wants to help more people.
Dr. Monsalve would like his community to know, that he is here for them and their well-being. He adds, "I am not here for myself or for my profession.” He is confident that by providing the right services, the right people will come.

In addition to Chiropractic care and treatment, Monsalve Integrative Chiropractic also offers CBD Clinical Products. Many of their patients have experienced pain relief benefits from CBD, also known as Cannabidiol or marijuana extract (without the THC). They offer a CBD cream - often described as a "miracle cream" that has helped many patients.
