Hurricane Irma Came This Way

From the Editors at South Florida Review

So nature had a say in how things were being run. We practically had to stop and pause and go back to basics. Well, for some of us at least. On September 9th, 2017 most businesses in South Florida had to prepare for the Category Five hurricane Irma that was en route. Most stores had sold out their water and gas stations had lines of cars waiting for gas. Since there was so much preparation that had to be done, South Florida Review was forced to take a break.

Helpful Hurricane Preparedness Tips

Because we are an eco-friendly conscious company, we re-used glass wine bottles (after thoroughly cleaning them) for filtered fresh water. We use a Brita Filter for filtering our water. So think of that, the next time you buy some wine. We also filled large Tupperware containers with water. If you have a good cover, you can actually fill these containers with filtered water. It might take you some time, but you will have gallons of clean, drinking water.

Here is a list of additional tips to know so you can be ready:
  • Have cash ready since if power goes out, merchants will not be able to take credit cards.
  • Buy lots of fruits. Green bananas if possible.
  • Do your laundry on the last day before. As much as you can. If power goes out, you won't want to have soiled undergarments.
  • Top off your gas tank. No power = no gasoline. Or you can do what we did in the aftermath and use your camping skills. (See picture below)

  • Make sure all your electronics are fully charged. You might want to look into a solar powered phone charger.
  • On the day prior, fill your tub with water. Not for drinking, but for flushing your toilet. No water power = nasty toilet!
  • Have enough water/food for three days since it may take the authorities that long to get a relief effort started.
  • Have a battery operated radio. If cell towers are inoperable, you won't have a cell phone to rely on.
  • Get an old fashioned flashlight with spare batteries. If your phone battery dies, you won't be able to use the flashlight app.
  • DO NOT use candles. They can fall and start a fire.
  • DO NOT use generators indoors.
  • Have FUN and STAY SAFE!
